As of October 4, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated its service standards for in-Canada application processing. IRCC now aims to meet its service standards 80% of the time, a decrease from the previous target of 90%. This adjustment reflects recent reporting on application processing, particularly for work permit renewals and other immigration-related applications.

Foreign nationals applying for a work permit renewal under the International Mobility Program (IMP) can continue to work under paragraph R186(u) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations while awaiting a decision. Applicants who submit their renewal application before their original permit expires and remain in Canada are authorized to continue working, provided they adhere to the conditions of their expired permit.

IRCC has also confirmed that an interim “Acknowledgement of Receipt” letter will serve as proof of continued work authorization for up to 180 days. If a decision on the work permit renewal is delayed beyond this period, workers can request an additional letter for continued authorization.

Additional Fact:

Did you know? The extension of “maintained status” (formerly implied status) allows foreign nationals to stay in Canada legally while their applications are processed, ensuring stability for both employees and employers.
