The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is a unique economic immigration program that is designed to attract and retain skilled workers and entrepreneurs who can contribute to Alberta’s economy. Here are some unique aspects of the program:
- Diverse Streams: The AAIP offers a wide range of streams for both workers and entrepreneurs, catering to different needs and situations. This includes the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Alberta Express Entry Stream, Rural Renewal Stream for workers, and the Rural Entrepreneur Stream, Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, Farm Stream, and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream for entrepreneurs.
- Rural Focus: The AAIP has a strong focus on rural development. The Rural Renewal Stream and the Rural Entrepreneur Stream are specifically designed to encourage immigration to rural communities in Alberta, promoting economic growth and diversity in these areas.
- Support for Entrepreneurs: The AAIP provides unique opportunities for entrepreneurs who plan to live in Alberta and start or buy a business in the province. This includes international graduates of Alberta post-secondary institutions and experienced farmers who plan to buy or start a farm in Alberta.
- Alignment with Federal Express Entry: The Alberta Express Entry Stream aligns with the federal Express Entry system, allowing the province to nominate candidates from the federal pool who meet the provincial economic, sector, and occupational priorities.
- Community Endorsement: In the Rural Renewal Stream, communities must apply for and become designated before they can recruit and endorse qualified candidates. This ensures that the immigration process is closely tied to the needs and capacities of local communities.
- Updates and Improvements: The AAIP is continuously updated and improved to remain competitive and effective. For example, as of April 3, 2023, the AAIP has made five changes to the program to make Alberta even more competitive in attracting and keeping skilled and in-demand workers and entrepreneurs.

Here are the latest updates on the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) as of April 27, 2023:
- New Opportunities for Tourism and Hospitality Workers: To support the recovery and growth of Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector, which was significantly affected by COVID-19, the AAIP is developing a new tourism and hospitality immigration stream. This stream will provide a dedicated and faster option to permanent residence for newcomers working in the industry. More details will be available in the coming months.
- Changes to Make it Easier for In-Demand Workers and Entrepreneurs to Become Permanent Residents: On April 3, 2023, several changes were made to the AAIP:
- Dedicated Healthcare Pathway: This pathway operates under the Alberta Express Entry Stream, and will use up to 30% of available Express Entry allocations in 2023. It is open to various healthcare professionals, including physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, physician assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and clinical social workers. Eligible healthcare professionals must have an Alberta job offer with an employer in the healthcare sector in Alberta, and must have verifiable proof of meeting the minimal requirements prescribed by the applicable regulatory organization to be able to practice in Alberta.
- AAIP Rural Entrepreneur Stream – Minimum Investment Criteria: The minimum investment required by applicants has been reduced from $200,000 to $100,000, making it more comparable and competitive with other entrepreneur streams.
- AAIP Rural Renewal Stream – Removal of Settlement Organization Endorsement Letter in Community Designation Application Process: This change streamlines the community designation application process. Communities are still required to complete a settlement plan as part of the designation application process to demonstrate adequate supports are in place to effectively welcome newcomers.
- Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP): The AAIP will now participate in the EMPP, which was developed to help refugees with the skills and qualifications needed in Canada immigrate through existing economic programs. The AAIP is working with the federal government to implement the pilot and supplement its annual nominations through this unique opportunity. More details on implementation will be available in the coming months.
- AAIP Phone Line: A new phone number is now available to offer an additional option to contact the AAIP. Phone: 780-644-7534. AAIP staff will respond to program inquiries and provide clarity on processes for clients. This complements the existing comprehensive suite of AAIP information and contact forms available online, including the self-serve application portal which guides and updates applicants interactively.
