Great news if you are working in Quebec and planning to become a permanent resident! Canada just announced a special program to make it easier for you to get a new work permit while you wait for your permanent residence application. This is a big deal for temporary workers in Quebec. If your work permit is expiring soon (or already expired), you might be able to get a new one quickly through this special policy. You do not need to go through the usual complicated process. The best part? Your application gets processed in just 30 days instead of the usual months. But you need to act fast โ€” the deadline is December 31, 2026.

๐ŸŽฏ What This New Policy Does โ€” Explained Simply

30
Days Processing
3
Eligible Groups
Dec 31
Application Deadline
๐Ÿข
Only for Quebec workers
Your job must be located in Quebec province. This policy does not apply to other provinces.
๐Ÿ“‹
Quebec PR application required
You must have submitted your DSP (permanent residence application) to Quebec government.
โšก
Super fast processing
30-day processing standard โ€” much faster than regular work permit applications.
๐Ÿ‘”
Same employer only
You must work for the same employer who sponsored your current (or previous) work permit.
This policy helps Quebec reach its goal of turning more temporary workers into permanent residents. It removes some of the usual barriers that make getting work permit extensions difficult. If you are already working in Quebec and have started your permanent residence process โ€” this could be exactly what you need to bridge the gap.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ The 3 Groups of People Who Can Apply

The government created three different categories. Each group has specific rules about when their work permits expired and their current status in Canada.
โœ…Cohort 1: Current valid work permit

Your work permit is still valid but expires on or before December 31, 2026. You want to extend it through this special policy instead of the regular process.

Your status: You are legally working in Canada right now
โณCohort 2: Applied before expiry (maintained status)

Your work permit expired, but you applied for an extension before it expired. You are on "maintained status" (legal to stay and work) while waiting for a decision.

Your status: You can keep working while your application is being processed
๐ŸšจCohort 3: Out of status (recent expiry)

Your work permit expired between March 13, 2026 and December 31, 2026. You did not apply for extension before it expired. You are currently "out of status" but can still apply for this special program.

Your status: Not legal to work โ€” but this program can restore your status
Important: You are NOT eligible if your work permit expired before March 13, 2026, or if you switched to visitor status after your work permit expired.

๐Ÿ“‹ What Documents You Need

The documents you need depend on which group you fall into. But everyone needs these two essential documents:
Required DocumentWhat It Is
๐ŸŽฏ DSP Confirmation LetterFrom Quebec government
๐Ÿ’ผ Job Offer LetterFrom same employer
๐Ÿ”ข LMIA-Exempt NumberStarts with letter "A"
๐Ÿ’ก May also need employment recordsIf requested
๐Ÿ’กAbout the DSP Confirmation

The DSP (Demande de Sรฉlection Permanente) is your application to Quebec for permanent residence. You get a confirmation letter when you submit it โ€” this is different from the CSQ (Certificat de sรฉlection du Quรฉbec) which comes later. You need the confirmation letter for this work permit application.

The most important thing is using the special code "PPTR2PRQC2026" in your application. Both you and your employer must include this code. Without it, your application will not get the fast 30-day processing.

๐Ÿ’ฐ How Much Does It Cost?

The fees depend on which group you are in and what you need to restore.
Standard Fees for Everyone
Work permit processing fee$155
Biometric fee (if needed)$85
Employer compliance fee$0 (waived!)
๐Ÿ’ธAdditional Fee for Cohort 3 (Out of Status)

If you are in Cohort 3 (your work permit expired and you are out of status), you need to pay an additional $246.25 restoration fee to get your legal status back.

Good news: The usual $230 employer compliance fee is waived under this special policy. Your employer does not have to pay it, which makes them more likely to support your application.

โšก How to Apply โ€” Step by Step

๐Ÿš€ Important: Online Only

You CANNOT apply at the border. All applications must be submitted online. Both you and your employer have specific steps to follow.

1
Your employer submits job offer through Employer Portal

Your employer must first submit a job offer using LMIA exemption code R01. They must add "PPTR2PRQC2026" in the job title field. This creates your LMIA-exempt number starting with "A".

2
Wait for your LMIA-exempt number

Your employer will receive an LMIA-exempt number starting with "A" (like A12345678). You need this number for your work permit application. Do not apply without it.

3
Submit your online work permit application

Use the IRCC online portal. Select "written job offer" and "applying under an active pilot project or public policy." Add "PPTR2PRQC2026" in the job title field.

4
Upload all required documents

Upload your DSP confirmation letter, job offer, and any other requested documents. Make sure all documents are clear and complete.

5
Pay fees and wait for decision

Pay your processing fees online. Your application should be processed within 30 days if you included the special code correctly.

โš ๏ธ
Critical: Use the Special Code

Both you and your employer MUST include "PPTR2PRQC2026" in your applications. If you forget this code, your application will be processed under regular timelines (much slower) instead of the 30-day guarantee.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ What This Means for International Workers

๐Ÿšจ The most important thing to understand:

Quebec
Only this province
vs
9 Others
No similar program yet
๐ŸŽฏThe Reality Check

This program only helps if you are already working in Quebec and have applied for Quebec permanent residence. If you work in Ontario, BC, or other provinces โ€” this does not apply to you (yet).

Challenge: Quebec has its own immigration system, separate from federal programs
โœจThe Opportunity

If you qualify, this is a fantastic bridge program. It gives you up to 12 more months to work legally while your permanent residence application is processed. Much better than being out of status.

Win: 30-day processing vs. months for regular applications
๐Ÿš€Take Action Now

Talk to your employer immediately if you think you qualify. They need to submit the job offer first. Do not wait until your work permit is close to expiring โ€” start the process now.

Timeline: Applications accepted until December 31, 2026
This program shows that Canada recognizes the challenges temporary workers face when transitioning to permanent residence. It is a good sign for future policies that might help workers
